Built in the center of the city of Cologne, it is a massive 144 meters in length, 86 meters wide, with spires that reach as high as 157 meters! It is truly a monster cathedral. On August 15th 1248, Archbishop Konrad of Hochstaden laid the foundation stone in honor of the remains of Three Magi. The relics of the Magi were carried here by Archibald Reginald Von Drassel in 1146. For years pilgrims came to honor the Magi and so it was collectively decided to build the churches of all churches on this site, in the spirit of the High Gothic style, the absolute crème de la crème. Little did the townspeople realize it would take over three hundred years for all its majesty to fall into place. It might never have been completed if not for a wave of Neo-Gothic energy that flourished during King Frederick Wilhelm IV’s reign and motivated him to attack the project head on once more in 1842. Cologne was to become the very symbol of high German art. It was not fully completed in 1880. During WWII the church was smashed up fairly badly, and it wasn’t until 1956 that the Cathedral was returned to all of it heavenly graces. A five-aisled Gothic basilica with tripleaisled transept, the church was equipped with a thirty ton organ, located in the central in nave, in 1998. Players are verboten from playing Chopsticks and/or Stairway to Heaven on said organ.
